Top Video Games of 2022: A new game has been added to the list of the top games of 2022, and it may be one of the most eagerly anticipated titles in recent years.
Nonetheless, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to assist you start sifting the wheat from the chaff by recommending our favorite games among the plethora of ambitious titles that are coming out in the coming months.
Several games have attempted to replicate The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s explorative wonder, but Elden Ring is the first to genuinely succeed. It’s every bit the strange, impenetrable, and ultimately gratifying game we’ve come to expect from creator From Software, with a terrain that will take years to fully grasp.
The game’s open-world elements, on the other hand, reframe much of the savagery of prior games, not detracting from the obstacles, but rather encouraging incremental progress over brute force. It’s fairly rare to get lost for a dozen hours in a remote part of the world, just to return to a previous task as an entirely different character, with stronger abilities and newfound insight. This game is incredible.
- Elden Ring is playable on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
DESTINY 2: THE WITCH QUEEN
Destiny has faced several challenges since its release in 2014, including shaky launch days, a global pandemic, and a sale to PlayStation, to name a few. So it’s practically a miracle that Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is still the best thing to happen to the series after eight years. It’s more Destiny, to be sure, with a new campaign, a new location, new weapons, and new abilities.
But it’s also Destiny without the qualifiers, or the longing dialogues like, “Imagine how fantastic this would be if Bungie did X, Y, or Z?” Bungie has spent the last few years honing the potential of their gigantic experiment, and it’s now paying off with The Witch Queen.
- Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is out now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Google Stadia.
THE LOST ARK
The achievement of Raiders of the Lost Ark is remarkable. Its superb class design and excellent ARPG gameplay would be enough to set it apart from many other games this year, but it’s also a content gold mine. The MMO, which debuted in Korea in 2019 before being converted for distribution in Europe and North America this year, started off strong with amazing endgame content (a rarity for the genre).
While Lost Ark is already a fantastic game in and of itself, developer Smilegate RPG has promised more endgame content and new classes in the near future. It appears like there is still a thrilling journey ahead of us.
- Lost Ark is available on Windows PC.
Horizon Forbidden West
Horizon Forbidden West is a big follow-up to the 2017 PlayStation exclusive Horizon, which finds an older, wiser Aloy exploring uncharted land. You’ll be able to play on a new landscape with side missions, new mechanical monsters to kill and tame, and new skills like the diving mask.
It’s a great extension of the mechanics that made the first such a compelling new PlayStation series, and the neon lights of a devastated Vegas and the beaches of San Francisco really show off the PS5’s potential.
- Horizon Forbidden West Available on Platform(s) : PS4 and PS5
Pokemon Legends: Arceus
Pokemon Legends: Arceus puts the monsters front and centre, shifting the focus away from defeating other trainers in gyms and toward the tried-and-true Pokemon concept of “must collect ’em all.” Instead of just wanting to smash in the faces of your Pokemon squad for clout, you’ll follow a storey and NPCs will show up with their own needs as you explore the location of Hisui.
Although the game’s visuals aren’t always as amazing as they could be, Pokemon Legends: Arceus is otherwise the ideal Pokemon fan experience, with a fuller narrative and plenty to discover.
- Pokemon Legends: Arceus Available on Platform(s) Platform(s) Nintendo Switch
TOTAL WAR: WARHAMMER 3
There are games that are ambitious, and then there are games that are ambitious. The latter is Total War: Warhammer 3. Its map is larger than the combined maps of its predecessors, and it debuted with eight fantastical factions, each more bizarre and extravagant than the previous. It’s also bizarre, refusing to rest on its laurels as the strategic trilogy comes to a close, instead pushing the boundaries wherever it can.
It sends players to the ethereal Chaos Realms before returning them to their homelands to fight diseased goliaths and shapeshifting demon rulers. It’s the furthest thing from a safe third instalment since Hitman 3. And, if the Total War: Warhammer 2 DLC road map is any indicator, the following few years will be more stranger.
- Total War: Warhammer 3 is available on PC, Mac, and Linux, as well as through the PC Game Pass service.
Rainbow Six Extraction
Rainbow Six Extraction is a horror spin on the Rainbow Six Siege PvE tactical shooter, sending you throughout the United States to take on the Archaeans, parasitic alien beings who haven’t come to Earth to discover what it has to offer. While it lacks some narrative depth and still feels like a rushed version of Siege’s 2018 Outbreak mode, there are moments of genuine horror and co-op mayhem to appreciate.
Rainbow Six Extraction has the potential to be a fantastic game if Ubisoft follows through on its promise to keep adding to the game.
Rainbow Six Extraction is available on Platform(s) PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X
