At the 2015 national youth trials, McLaughlin lowered her 400-meter hurdles best to 55.28, which was a world record for a 15-year-old and second on the all-time world youth list after Leslie Maxie’s world youth best (and U.S. high school record) of 55.20 in 1984.
In 2015, she won gold at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia, with a time of 55.94. By the end of the year, she was the best junior and youth athlete in the world.
McLaughlin won the 400-meter hurdles at the 2016 New Balance national outdoor high school championships in 54.46, breaking Lashinda Demus’s 54.70 American junior records, Maxie’s prep record, and the world youth best.
She also ran a fast 400-meter leg in the Swedish medley relay for Union Catholic. The team set a new high school record with a time of 2:07.99.

McLaughlin was part of a team that set a new world record for the indoor distance medley relay on January 28, 2017, at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. The team had a time of 10:40.31, which was an American record.

Since Carol Lewis and Denean Howard qualified for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, which were not held, McLaughlin is the youngest athlete to be chosen for the American Olympic track and field team.

Later that month, at the 123rd Penn Relays, McLaughlin ran the fastest high school girls relay split in history in the Championship of America high school girls 4400. (400 meters). In a race with eight teams, McLaughlin took the baton at the end and ran a 50.37 second split.
