 Career

Staubach spent one year at the New Mexico Military Institute before he went to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1961. He played quarterback for the Navy Midshipmen football team. He played his first game in 1962 when he was a third-class midshipman (a sophomore).

It was against the University of Minnesota. In his first game, he took over for the starting pitcher Ron Klemick, but they lost to Minnesota 21-0. A few weeks later, President John F. Kennedy flipped the coin at the famous Army-Navy game, where Staubach got to start. Staubach’s team beat Army by a score of 31–14.

Staubach did well in college all through his time there. During his second class (junior) season in 1963, he led the Midshipmen to a final ranking of No. 2 in the country (after losing to the No. 1 team, the University of Texas, in the 1964 Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day).

After alternating with Craig Morton as quarterback for a few games, Roger Staubach took over the job full-time in week 8 of the 1971 season. He would go on to lead the Cowboys to ten straight wins, including the team’s first Super Bowl win over the Miami Dolphins in January 1972. Staubach negotiated his own contract after this successful season. He got a three-year deal worth about $75,000 a year.

Due to a separated shoulder, Staubach couldn’t play quarterback for most of the 1972 season. When he came back for a divisional playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers, he threw two touchdown passes in the last 90 seconds to win 30-28. He stayed the starting quarterback for the rest of his career. In Super Bowl XII against the Denver Broncos in 1977, he led the Cowboys to their second Super Bowl win.

Staubach played in the NFL for 11 years with the Dallas Cowboys. During that time, he completed 1,685 passes for 22,700 yards, scored 153 touchdowns, and threw 109 interceptions. He announced his retirement in 1979 and left football for good in March 1980.

The main reason he quit was that his doctor warned him about his health after he got twenty concussions during his career and the bad things that could happen if he got another one.

Military Service

Staubach was told he couldn’t see colors when he was a junior at the Naval Academy. So, he was put right into the Supply Corps, where it didn’t matter that he couldn’t tell the difference between red and green lights.

After he graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1965, he volunteered to serve in Vietnam for a year. He was a Supply Corps officer at the Chu Lai base and port until September 1967.

He was in charge of 41 enlisted men. He spent the rest of his time in the Navy in the U.S., where he played football on different service teams to get ready for a future job in the NFL.
