Career
Staubach spent one year at the New Mexico Military Institute before he went to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1961. He played quarterback for the Navy Midshipmen football team. He played his first game in 1962 when he was a third-class midshipman (a sophomore).
It was against the University of Minnesota. In his first game, he took over for the starting pitcher Ron Klemick, but they lost to Minnesota 21-0. A few weeks later, President John F. Kennedy flipped the coin at the famous Army-Navy game, where Staubach got to start. Staubach’s team beat Army by a score of 31–14.
Staubach did well in college all through his time there. During his second class (junior) season in 1963, he led the Midshipmen to a final ranking of No. 2 in the country (after losing to the No. 1 team, the University of Texas, in the 1964 Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day).
After alternating with Craig Morton as quarterback for a few games, Roger Staubach took over the job full-time in week 8 of the 1971 season. When he came back for a divisional playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers, he threw two touchdown passes in the last 90 seconds to win 30-28. He stayed the starting quarterback for the rest of his career. In Super Bowl XII against the Denver Broncos in 1977, he led the Cowboys to their second Super Bowl win.
