Record Store Day: A group of independent record store owners and employees came up with Record Store Day in 2007 to commemorate and promote the US’s over 1400 independent record stores and many more worldwide.

Record Store Day began on April 19, 2008. Every continent except Antarctica has Record Store Day stores today.

This Day Is for the People That Make Up the Record Store World

This day is for the people that make up the record store world—staff, consumers, and artists.


  • Come together to honour the record store culture and the impact these locally owned stores play in their communities.
  • Special vinyl and CD releases, as well as promotional items, are manufactured for the day.
  • Performances, cookouts, body painting, artist meet & greets, parades, DJs spinning records… Record Store Day began with a limited list of titles in 2008 and has grown to include artists and labels of various sizes, genres, and price points.
  • For numerous years, independent labels and distributors dominated the Record Store Day Official Release List.

Record stores and their customers’ tastes continue to be represented on the list.

Meet and greets and music purchasing. Jesse “Boots Electric” Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal) designated himself the “Record Store Day Ambassador” in 2009, and Joshua Homme (Eagles of Death Metal) followed suit in 2010.

The sash has been worn by Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, Jack White, Chuck D, Dave Grohl, Metallica, St. Vincent, Run The Jewels, Pearl Jam, and Brandi Carlile. The 2021 RSD Ambassador will be announced soon!

Record Store Day has been an official holiday in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Boise, Charleston, Raleigh, and Las Vegas for 13 years.


Record Store Day co-founder Michael Kurtz was named a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France in 2013, recognizing his contribution to the French cultural and artistic life.

Music labels’ trade group A2IM recognized Record Store Day as its Marketplace Ally of the Year in 2015.

  • While there is only one Record Store Day every year, the group works with indie and large labels all year to promote contests, special releases, and promotions.
  • Locally owned stores selling music all year. Record Store Day organized its first RSD Black Friday event in 2010, giving record retailers exclusive releases to refocus the biggest shopping day of the year on the desirable, special products found locally.
  • Record Store Day 2016 launched Summer Camp, a conference devoted to the independent record store. The conference allows record store owners and employees to network with labels, distributors, vendors, and anybody else who works in the record store industry.
  • It was founded in 2017 by Record Store Day and aims to unite companies and individuals involved in the vinyl revival.
  • Due to the global epidemic that hit record stores globally in 2020, Record Store Day was broken into three separate events: August 29, September 26, and October 24.


The focus wasn’t on parties or shows, but on the comfort, joy, and fun that their products gave their clients. Record stores were vital during a pandemic.
