Google has just been spotted testing iOS-like update progress indicators. It’s almost certainly limited testing (we don’t have that, we ourselves), but if you’re not familiar with the concept, Google shows icons in the launcher for apps that are currently updating or installed in greyed out, with a progress bar indicating update progress The text that replaces the app’s name shows what’s currently happening.

The feature differs slightly from iOS visually in that it uses an external progress bar that follows the edge of the icon rather than an internal circular/circular progress bar. like that sound To capture the system’s highlight color cues, based on the examples we’ve seen. However, like iOS, it rotates the app icon during the update process, and the text below the app icon is replaced with a description of the current update action.

The indicator also appears for recently installed apps if your launcher is configured to empty them on your home screen, where they will appear gray with a progress indicator and label until they are installed.
We should also point out that Android also does something similar to apps when restoring them from backups during the device setup process, showing apps from the backup for your home screen layout greyed out before you install them. Although this has a similar progress indicator that also follows the shape of the icon, it does not replace the label as this newly spotted feature does:
The report comes from the Pixel 5 running Android 12 Beta 1 with the Pixel launcher and a fairly recent version from the Play Store. It’s not clear exactly what apps or app versions this test might be related to – it could be a feature of Android 12 or something else, and we probably won’t be sure until more reports of change land or it rolls out more broadly. Google has been known to run A/B testing on the Play Store, and we may see this come and go in various forms over the next several months.
It’s also not the first “iOS-inspired” tweak that Google would make for the Play Store or app update process.
