Gaming is a big genre on YouTube. There is a natural synergy between playing a video game yourself and watching others exhibit their gaming prowess. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to see several gaming influencers on YouTube.
We’ve recently written about the recent rise of eSports. While most people watch these games via live streaming on networks like Twitch, gamers love to submit movies to their YouTube accounts, remembering game highlights and making predictions for future matchups.
Yet the most noticeable impact is a retro game that goes back to the 90s — Minecraft. Many of the most popular YouTube channels focus on Minecraft mods, taking you inside the Minecraft World. Incredibly the most prominent followers of these videos weren’t born when Minecraft was initially introduced.
You could argue that the most popular gamer of them all is PewDiePie — he established his career filming videos of him playing games and commenting on his play. But he has moved on since then. Few of his latest videos have a game theme.

Mark Fischbach, born in Hawaii but currently resides in California, is the one in charge of the Markiplier channel.
The “Let’s Play” style of gaming video, in which the player documents his playtime of a game via the medium of a video, is his preferred format. He favors a commenting style that is expressive and full of vitality.
In each of his videos, he maintains the illusion of being a gregarious and larger-than-life figure. He will sometimes appear as Wilfred Warfstache, complete with a pink mustache on his upper lip. He frequently uses brightly colored dyes on his hair.
He enjoys playing independent and scary video games the most, such as the Five Nights at Freddy’s series of games.
Markiplier is famous for his live charity streams, in which he plays video games while collecting donations from viewers.
He is currently a member of Polaris, a subnetwork that is part of Maker Studios.

Tom Cassell has run UK-based 24-year-old TheSyndicateProject for the past seven years. People call him “Tom Syndicate” a lot.
He started the site by posting videos of Halo and Modern Warfare 2, but he has since added more games. His videos of Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies are viral.
He has a Minecraft section with a series of videos he calls “The Minecraft Project,” just like many other gaming channels.
Tom is also well-known on Twitch, where his channel has more than 2.4 million followers, making it the most followed channel on Twitch.
In the past, he got in trouble with the FTC for not telling them about his relationships with influencers.

Daniel Middleton is an English YouTuber who goes by the name DanTDM. Since Dan started his channel in 2012, it has changed. At first, he called it The Diamond Minecart, which is why the track is now called TDM. At that time, most of his fans were kids between the ages of 5 and 10.
As the name of his channel suggested, most of Dan’s videos were of him playing Minecraft with different mods. He found so much fan-made content in Minecraft that he could make videos full-time, with enough variety to keep his young audience interested.
In 2016, he changed his channel to show a broader range of games. He also saw that the people who watched him were getting older.
There are two Guinness World Records that Dan holds:
- “Most goals scored by a team of two in a game of Rocket League.”
- “Most goals scored by a team of three in a game of Rocket League.”
- “Most views for a YouTube channel that only shows Minecraft videos.”
Alastair Aiken, also known as Ali-A, is a British YouTuber who is 24 years old. His videos are about Call of Duty, Pokemon Go, and Minecraft.
He started his channel as Matrix. Later, he changed it to Ali-A and added a second channel called Morelia.

Matthew Patrick, also known as MatPat and The Game Theorists, posts videos about primarily educational games.
One of his most popular video series is called “Game Theory: The Smartest Show in Gaming,” which is how he describes it. Watch for your favorite games, but learn something as well. When real-world research looks at the logic of video games, anything goes.”
In his videos, he talks about things like the culture behind video games and tries to make connections between different video game universes.
MatPat looks at games much more profoundly than most popular YouTube gaming channels.
The channel is called “Game Theorists” (with two t’s) because he has a team of people to host different parts of his videos.

He keeps his channel in great shape. Most of the videos on his playlists show the year they were made. He has playlists with names like “2018/2017 Series,” “Most Popular of 2017,” “2016 Series,” “2015 Series,” and so on. These are from his series from 2011 to 2010.

The popular Smosh YouTube channel has a spinoff called Smosh Games. Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, who made Smosh, set it up, but Anthony is no longer a member of the Smosh team.
Smosh Games has a relatively large cast of people who make games of themselves playing games and commenting on them as they go. They also share their thoughts on the relative quality of different games and review games.
Some regulars from the main Smosh YouTube channel make appearances in their videos.
Since Summer 2015, they have held “Smosh Summer Games” and “Smosh Winter Games” every year.
