Rai was born on November 1, 1973 in Mangalore, Karnataka, into a Tulu-speaking Bunt family. Her father, Krishnaraj, was an Army biologist who died on March 18, 2017, and her mother, Vrinda, is a housewife. She has one older brother, Aditya Rai, who works as a merchant navy engineer.
Rai’s film Dil Ka Rishta (2003) was co-produced and co-written with her brother and mother. Rai attended the Arya Vidya Mandir High School in Mumbai after his family relocated there.
Rai attended Jai Hind College for a year before enrolling in DG Ruparel College in Matunga, where she received a 90 percent in her HSC exams.
During her adolescence, she studied classical dance and music for five years. Her favourite subject was zoology, and she pondered a career in medicine at first.
She then studied in Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture with the intention of becoming an architect, however she eventually dropped out to pursue a career in modelling.
