37 countries say Russia and Belarus "should not be allowed to host" any international sporting events

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said she will travel to Washington, DC, on Tuesday to meet with her US counterpart, Anthony Blinken.

Truss told a news briefing on Tuesday before his US visit that the UK would “move forward” in “weakening” the Russian economy on the side of allies.

“What we are working (…) with our allies for is to weaken the Russian economy, and to stop financing that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is using his own war machine. We have applied sanctions to the Russian Central Bank, to the SWIFT system, we have frozen bank assets, and in fact the UK has frozen more bank assets than any other country, we have frozen a total of 364 billion ($478 billion) worth of assets. We have also closed British airspace to Russian aircraft and our ports to Russian ships.

Now is not the time to give up. “We need to keep moving forward with our support for Ukraine and weaken the Russian economy,” Truss said.

“Oil and gas are (important) and we are working with the G7 in terms of setting a timetable to reduce dependence on Russian oil and gas and we need to move forward with banks, we need to completely eliminate access to SWIFT. We need to freeze more banking assets “.

It is important that we remain strong and united with our allies, and it is important that we ensure that Putin loses in Ukraine. She cautioned that the consequences of not losing him are simply too horrific to contemplate.

Truss said Putin’s invasion of Ukraine “shattered European security” and that the UK and its allies were now “in a battle with Russia for information”. As a result, the Foreign Secretary said, the UK had re-established an information unit that had been abandoned after the end of the Cold War.

Besides weakening the Russian economy, Truss said the UK’s strategy is also to provide defensive arms and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, as well as to isolate Russia diplomatically.

“What we are working to do with our G7 allies is encourage more of these countries to provide defensive weapons to support Ukraine and encourage more of these countries to join us in punishing Russia. And it is important that countries like Switzerland, South Korea, Singapore have all joined in this Effort “.

“I am traveling to America to redirect this agenda and I think it is important to note that global security is indivisible, what is good for Euro-Atlantic is good for the Indo-Pacific, and a strong NATO will help deter aggressors everywhere. That is why we need to step up our efforts to strengthen European security side by side with our allies in Europe, including the European Union and our NATO allies but also with the United States and allies like Japan.
